Step 1 : Measure your work pace

Before calibrating your equipment, it's important to time yourself on a reference area. Choose an area of approximately 1000 square feet and perform several tests on different terrains with varying configurations. The goal is to determine the time it takes to treat this area using water alone. By timing yourself, you can assess your work pace and establish a baseline for calibration.

Remember that each individual has their own work pace, so the calibration should be tailored to your stride and walking speed. It is recommended to have dedicated equipment for each team member to maintain consistency in the work pace. Once you have established the time required to treat the reference area, which typically ranges between 1 minute and 1 minute 30 seconds, you can move on to the next calibration step.

Different types of nozzles have varying flow rates, such as 15 l/min, 18 l/min, 20 l/min, and so on. Initially, it is recommended to purchase different nozzles to determine your preference. There are also different brands of nozzles and various types of spray patterns, such as wide or narrow. It's essential to experiment and try different options to find the one that suits you best.

Let's assume you opt for a nozzle with a flow rate of 15 l/min. Maintaining this flow rate and staying within the maximum pressure of 15 l/min is crucial. To check this, you can time the flow rate by collecting it in a graduated container for one minute. It lets you determine if your flow rate matches the desired value. Maintaining precise calibration is essential to ensure proper product application. If the pressure of your pump doesn't allow you to achieve precisely 15 l/min, it can affect the spray and make it difficult to assess the product dosage. So, be sure to time your flow rate to ensure you achieve the desired pressure based on the chosen nozzle.

The most crucial aspect during product application is to wet the entire surface without saturating it with water. The area must be quickly wetted everywhere without creating puddles. The goal is to treat the lawn uniformly, ensuring that each part receives an adequate amount of product. Even if you're uncomfortable with calibration, the key is visually confirming that the surface is well-wetted without creating puddles. This approach ensures that the product effectively reaches the roots. Additionally, strive for balance by avoiding rushing the application with an excessively powerful product. Uniformity is paramount, without going overboard.

After calibrating your equipment and choosing the appropriate nozzle, it's time to determine the quantity of product to use based on the selected product type. Let's take the example of the Par 3 product, which recommends a dosage of 60 ml per 1000 square feet.

Depending on your walking pace, which can vary from person to person, you should have a rough idea of the time it takes you to cover 1000 square feet. Let's assume you complete this task in 1 minute and 20 seconds. Then, with a nozzle flowing at 15 l/min, you must calculate the amount of liquid to apply. In 1 minute and 20 seconds, you will use 20 litres for the area because the nozzle delivers 15 l/min, and you need 1 minute and 20 seconds to cover 1000 square feet.

It's essential to refer to the specific product recommendations indicated on the label for the dosage recommendation in ml per 1000 square feet (e.g., 20 ml/1000 square feet). Thus, by knowing the quantity of product to apply per 1000 square feet and choosing the appropriate nozzle while timing your steps, you can quickly determine the total amount of product required for your area.

For example, if you have an area of 2000 square feet, it will take 2 minutes and 40 seconds to cover this zone with a nozzle flowing at 15 l/min. Therefore, you will need to use the total amount of product corresponding to this figure.

Step 4 : Calculating the mixture in the tank

 Once you have determined the actual quantity of product to use per 1000 square feet, it's time to calculate the amount of product to put in your tank to achieve the proper concentration. The tank size may vary from person to person, but the calculation is simple.

Let's take a concrete example: suppose you need to apply 60 ml of product mixed per 1000 square feet, and your tank has a capacity of 1100 litres (300 gallons). Therefore, you know that you need to mix 20 litres of product per 1000 square feet.

Now, all you need to do is divide the capacity of your tank by the quantity of product mixed per 1000 square feet. In our example, it would be 1100 litres / 20 = 55 thousand square feet. It means you can treat an area of 55,000 square feet with your 1100-litre (300-gallon) tank.

Suppose the product you're using recommends a dosage of 60 ml per thousand square feet. In that case, you can easily calculate the amount of product required for your tank. Next, multiply the dosage recommended by the number of thousand square feet you can treat with your tank. For example, 60 ml * 55,000 square feet = 3300 ml, which is 3.3 litres, in an 1100-litre (300-gallon) tank.

By performing these calculations, you can ensure that you have the proper product concentration in your tank, allowing you to achieve optimal results when applying it to your lawn. It's essential to adhere to these measurements to avoid underuse or overuse of the product, which could compromise its effectiveness.
